Sovereign Governance Determination

There can only be self determination if there is emancipation. Right now the leadership have no idea that emancipation is to be free of Foreign political and legislative laws. In South(ern) Africa it’s the extremely opposite… total enslavement in Foreign Policy and Zero co-operation amongst the self elected representatives.

Self Determination as a Process

Only way for self determination to take place starts with education for us by us across the lines of social divisions. Self determination begins with the individual before the Khoellectiv – for the Khoellectiv to be considered self identification is the first and easiest of all procedures. What must follow is the manifesto of supporting people on the ground doing the actual work.

For the self determination of indigenous peoples and communities:

1) the necessities to find common ground in identity, ideology and practice for going forward

2) governance programmes need to be instituted in school for students

– sports/ culture/ arts / business and finance /organisation and leadership ethics / health / education/ food etc

3) acquisition, dissemination and protecting knowledge resources: Khoellectiv knowledge among the practitioners is the fundamental cornerstone of developing an indigenous knowledge systems based education

With regards to Obstacles;

We find that there’s more of assimilation by leadership for fear of being left out / not being black enough instead of being African.
The gross political immaturity among the leaders who are not involving communities in indigenous identity awareness activities or supporting community members actively involved with education programs.

Unfortunately the indigenous leadership are suffering from inferiority complex where they are too willing to assist non-indigenous people in representing indigenous communities and peoples on an international platform! Not to mention the fraudulent misrepresentation by “chiefs and leadership” claiming on an international platform.

We should be preparing our youth to represent our communities and people as our ambassadors;

– not just the arts and culture (cooning: to make use of indigenous culture to deter from important issues)

– Policy and governances

– Food sovereignty vs Food Governances Policy to Act – no Representive in any of the meetings

– IKS Policy to Legislation- no Representive

– Health practioner & Healthcare Policy to Legislation – no Representive

Sovereignty; the authority to rule.

In political theory, the ultimate overseer, or authority, in the decision-making process of the state and in the maintenance of order. … the term was originally understood to mean the equivalent of supreme power.

Sovereignty has two basic aspects ‘external’ and ‘internal’. Internally speaking it means that state has supreme power over the people within its domain and externally it implies complete freedom from foreign rule.

Sovereignty over the same territory cannot reside simultaneously in two different authorities, that is, sovereignty is indivisible.

Sovereignty cannot be divided without ceasing to be sovereignty proper, and precisely this quality of being indivisible distinguishes sovereign authority from other forms of political power. Dividing sovereignty between two or more authorities within a given state would therefore be to dissolve that state into parts. The indivisibility of sovereignty is thus a necessary condition of the unity of the state.

From my point of view they are not working for or with the people or community!

It’s about segregation from the communities and money raising organisations with indigenous “group” names.

Autochthonous communities are identified according the area they originate from…. not segregated groups of people.

Leaders are people known and elected by the community they Representive of or live in.

Salon Del Gusto, Terra Madre, Indigenous Peoples Network, Slow Food, Italy, Turin

You cannot speak of one without mentioning the other, the people, the vibe, the atmosphere, the languages, the Experience.

What an amazing way to connect around foods and after so many years of Slow Food becoming an international event, as a first timer it was amazing to meet so many first timers and old timers with tons of knowledge and experience. The words which stood out the most is That” WE should have courage for our convictions and stand for what is right no matter the negative consequences, because people will come to realise what is truth and what is real.” (Was not that of Carlo Petrini in particular but of an Italian Government Official in reference to cheese?)

The first persons I connected with were also the last persons I greeted at Terra Madre. This was a greater opportunity to connect with South African Delegation to work towards improving our Ark of Taste with reference to connecting the stories of people, their foods and Origen’s. It is also good to know what is expected and how to get more people who are working towards the same outcome involved in Slow Food. My Host was nothing short of amazing and so was Turin.

The Terra Madre experience itself was truly overwhelming in every aspect, meeting people from all over the world listening to their stories. KNOWING THAT WE ARE ALL WORKING TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL DOES NOT MEANS WE ALL HAVE A COMMON PROBLEM – our stories are different and it needs to be listened to.(Here to Listen vs Hear to Listen)

Even now it brings tears to my eyes listening to Palestinian brothers, sisters, mothers; fathers tell their story of systematic genocide and onslaught as the rest of world idly watches Israel since 1973; the womyn from Turtle Island Community whose two sons were racially profiled and arrested in Colorado, to the Tanzanian government not only arresting but also creating new laws to further restrain their own indigenous people from a Slow Living or Slow Life.

When it come to the indigenous story there is always a political undertone of working and at times fighting to towards the rights of natural indigenous living with Terra Madre, recognition of knowledge and having indigenous people represent themselves, their food, their heritage, their people, From the Turtle Island Communities (east Coast of Canada, USA and Mexico), to the Fishers from the Balkans and Lapland with encroaching tourism and industry suffering the effects of global warming, to the Philippines where the good idea of decentralisation of fishing permits  to make it more accessible at a municipal level started to bring up the problem of territory issues amongst the fisher villages situated along the coast next to each other which happens to be in a district next to them.

While some of us want to move away from the cities and surrounding Chaos to the quieter rural or country life to be more in touch with nature, there are those coming from the rural / country areas to the cities for what seems like a better life yet are faced with new harsher adversities of social decay. Positive Stories of rooftop gardens on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt becoming a place of social gathering, an extension of the seed we plant. The trauma of genocide Cambodia had to face and healing and building the new first generation through agriculture. Having laws passed to access land in Detroit, USA so that people can feed themselves and others too.

Historical Gardens surviving wars, neglect being revived, rare fruits and vegetables being rediscovered. The value of keeping record is the ability to save a species, whether it is Italy or Russia. At times we see value through a different lens when it comes to advocating keeping ones heritage alive. Be it historical, cultural or a new use for the seed, or method of extraction having government, international or academic support can make the difference, most importantly is the financial support and profitability to sustain the product as a food source locally and internationally.

At every Slow Forum there was something to learn, share, experience or exchange….
